The average fees charged by locums booking work directly with practices have risen by between 1.6% and 5.8% over the past year, depending on which part of the country you are in.
Updated locum rates for 2015 are now available following the annual Medeconomics/GP survey of locums, which was conducted in September and October 2015. This is the second year Medeconomics has included details of the average fee charged by locums in each geographical area, along with the range of fees charged.
A total of 701 locums took part in the survey, of these 193 took work from locum agencies and 61 took work via locum chambers. Click on the links below to see full details of the rates charged.
Rates in the north of England have gone up on average by 5.8% compared with figures from this time last year. Rates in London increased by 5.6% on average, in the south of England rates were up by 5% on average and figures for Midlands and East of England are up 4.3% from last year.
Scotland and Northern Ireland both saw fees increase by 3.2% on average, while Wales had the lowest increase in fees at just 1.6%.
Other findings from the survey
Despite the rises in the average rates charged by locums, only 28% of those survyed said that they had increased their fees in the past 12 months. Some 63% said that their fees had remained the same, while 9% said their fees had decreased during the past year.
The survey also showed that demand for locum work is soaring. Of those who were undertaking locum work 12 months ago, 60% said that demand for their services was higher now than a year ago, 29% said demand was about the same and just 11% said that demand was lower.
